HBO Now Stand-Alone Service Shakes Up TV Industry
Demonstrating why if you were starting a new network today you would work with Akamai or another provider to set up content engines near most US metro areas instead of seeking licenses to buy. Who wouldn’t want to start “Ubikwinet multicasting company” instead of another dying broadcast company?
O unveiled its new stand-alone streaming service — HBO Now — not from the company’s home base of New York City, the hub of traditional media, but rather on the edge of Silicon Valley.
The venue spoke volumes.
On Monday, HBO Chief Executive Richard Plepler joined Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook on the stage of an Apple product event in San Francisco.
There, Plepler announced HBO’s new $14.99-a-month service called HBO Now, marking the first time HBO will be made available directly to customers.
Beginning in April, Apple customers will be able to subscribe to the service using the HBO Now app on their iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches, or directly on Apple TVs.
